2015 Daytona 24 Hours - GTD Preview

Following up from yesterday's post about the LMPC class, I'll be tackling the GTD class today. Using my regular method of going in reverse order of "least interesting (to me)" to "most interesting (to me)", that'd mean that the GTD class is the second least interesting class (to me). Why's that, when this class was second most interesting last year, you ask? That's a great question, and I'm glad you asked, fictional reader. GTD has taken a step backward for me, due to the fact that it's gone from a semi-insane bar-fight 29 entries down to a much less melee-esque 19 entries. It seems that we've lost a bunch of Audi R8s, as there are only two entered this year, down from last year's five. Also, we only have three Ferrari 458 Italias, which is down from last year's eight. That's eight of the missing ten entries from last year's race, so a bit of the variety is down. On the plus side, we do still have cars from Ferrari, Audi, Porsche, Aston Martin, Dodge, and BMW, so we've got representatives from the same six manufacturers as last year. So, the class is changed, but not really. Got it? Didn't figure you did. OK, on to the odds.

The Little Chancers

#18 Muehlner Motorsports America Porsche 911 GT America - This year, I couldn't just completely rule any one team out, like I did last year. This year, I've at least heard of one driver on every squad. I've heard of just about all the drivers on this team (Darryl O'Young, Marc Basseng, Connor De Philippi), but not everybody (welcome to my brain, Matteo Beretta). I've gotta think that this team doesn't have the firepower to be up front after 24 hours. Odds - 100 to 1.

#19 Muehlner Motorsports America Porsche 911 GT America - See above, especially since De Philippi and Beretta are two of the three announced drivers for this car. Odds - 100 to 1.

#009 TMG-AMR Aston Martin V12 Vantage - I've heard of the two entered drivers (Derek DeBoer and Max Riddle), but couldn't tell you one single thing about either one. That's a bad hit rate. Odds - 100 to 1.

#64 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia - I've heard of all four drivers in this squad (Francisco Longo, Daniel Serra, Marcos Gomes and Andrea Bertolini), but only one of them (Bertolini, the former Maserati factory driver) appears to have had much success outside of his home country. Nope. Odds - 50 to 1.

#49 AF Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia - Three mid-packers in World Endurance Championship GTE-Am (Michele Rugolo, Rui Aguas and Matt Griffin) plus one guy I've never heard of (Pasin Lathouras) does not equal a winning combination. Odds - 50 to 1.

#28 Konrad Motorsport Porsche 911 GT America - It's Klaus Bachler plus four guys who I think I've heard read their names once or twice on results sheets but otherwise have never heard of. Nope. Odds - 50 to 1.

The Mid-Pack

#007 TMG-AMR Aston Martin V12 Vantage - This car proved to be lightning fast in the hands of James Davison last year (who is with the team for the full season again, along with Christina Nielsen), especially over one lap in qualifying, but not so much so in basically anybody else's hands. Perhaps the team has made some strides in improving overall speed over long runs, but until I see it, I can't really imagine it being up front after 24 hours. Odds - 40 to 1.

#45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Audi R8 LMS - This car is being driven by an ex-Formula 1 driver (Markus Winkelhock), a promising young American (Robert Thorne), and two Japanese guys who I've never heard of (Satoshi Hoshino and Tomonobu Fujii). If those Japanese guys are as fast as the guys on "The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift", maybe this car has a shot at winning. However, I fear that nobody is as fast as the guys on "The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift". Which makes me kind of sad, in an existential sort of way. Odds - 40 to 1.

#97 Turner Motorsport BMW Z4 - An extremely solid driver lineup, featuring BMW factory drivers Markus Palttala and Andy Priaulx, longtime Turner Motorsports driver Michael Marsal, and the one and only Boris Said (enough said). The BMW may be down on straightline speed again, and may have jumped to Pirelli World Challenge for the rest of the season, but they still finished strong at Daytona last year (7th in class) and won the teams championship in 2014. Can't be ruled out. Odds - 13 to 1.

#81 GB Autosport Porsche 911 GT America - A car sporting Porsche standout driver Damien Faulkner, standout "drive anything" guy Mike Skeen, and last year's Porsche Supercup runner up Kuba Giermaziak, this team has its strong points. However, I'm not so sure how strong the rest of the squad is. Could still pull out a win, though. Odds - 13 to 1.

#73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche 911 GT America - Longtime Porsche campaigner Park Place Motorsports has put an extremely solid squad on the grid this year. This team doesn't really appear to have any weak links, though I'm not sure that any of the drivers is as quick over a full stint as some of the full-on factory drivers will be at the end of the race. They'll probably be in the conversation at the end. Odds - 13 to 1.

#23 Team Seattle/Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT America - Another solid squad. Another team that gets an Odds - 13 to 1.

#22 Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT America - See above entry. Am I starting to repeat myself? I afraid that I am. Am I repeating myself? Odds - 13 to 1.

#44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT America - The jokesters of the paddock. I'll be pulling for these knuckleheads, but I just can't give them better than Odds - 13 to 1.

#48 Paul Miller Racing Audi R8 LMS - An absolute lightning fast lineup (Christopher Haase, Bryce Miller, Dion von Moltke and Rene Rast). I'm not sure how quick the car is in comparison to the competition, since it was only 9th fastest at the "Roar Before the 24" test, but I have a hard time picking against that lineup. Odds - 13 to 1.

#58 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT America - It's the car with that actor guy (Patrick Dempsey) and some seriously fast other guys (Madison Snow, Jan Heylen and Philipp Eng). Dempsey is clearly the slowest of the four (though he is capable), but the other three guys could carry this car to the top of the podium. Odds - 13 to 1.

#93 Riley Motorsports Dodge Viper SRT - The Vipers were lightning fast at the Roar Before test, and they've also got some fantastic driving talent. This car has ex-Viper factory drivers Dominik Farnbacher and Kuno Wittmer, so it's in plenty capable hands. Will it be around at the end? If it is, it should be in the top-5. Odds - 13 to 1.

#33 Riley Motorsports Dodge Viper SRT - Ahem. The Vipers were lightning fast at the Roar Before test, and they've also got some fantastic driving talent. This car has the Bleekemolen brothers (Sebastiaan and Jeroen), plus Marc Goossens. Will it be around at the end? If it is, it should be in the top-5. Odds - 13 to 1.

The Favorites

#63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia - The eagle-eyed among you will notice that I basically copped out and gave ten of the 19 cars in the class the exact same odds. That was by design. This class is seriously impossible to pick. But, with a gun to my head (as I said last year about this same group of drivers), the nod for the class has to go to the Bill Sweedler/Townsend Bell/Anthony Lazzaro/Jeff Segal team, as all but Lazzaro (who is pretty darn handy in a Ferrari himself) was on the winning team in 2014. They've gotta be the incumbent favorites, if only by a slight margin. Odds - 10 to 1.

Two classes down means that we're halfway through our analysis. Stay tuned for the GTLM and Prototype previews later in the week!

2015 Daytona 24 Hours - Le Mans Prototype Challenge Preview

Greetings, everyone, and welcome to yet another year of the GrabBagSports Blogathon! I'm back here for the first time in months (let's not go counting just how many months, shall we?) to get things rolling this week with my traditional Daytona 24 Hours class previews. Just like last year, I'm going to tackle the classes in the order that I feel like tackling them, and just like last year, it'll be in the order of "least interesting" to "most interesting" (to me). And once again, leading off will be the Le Mans Prototype Challenge class. This class has been made slightly more interesting (to me) since last year by IMSA's adoption of engine regulations (basically, a different camshaft, from what I've heard) that will allow the LMPC cars to have better straightline speed and a little less low end torque. These changes should serve to make the cars a little easier to handle (through lower torque) for the "amateur" drivers in the class, and the higher top end speed should allow the LMPCs to be able to pass or at least hang with the GTLM/GTD cars better on the straights, which should hopefully cause less stackups once the cars get to corner turn in (the LMPCs will be closer going to the braking zone, when they can then use their downforce and lighter weight to pass the GTs a little more easily). However, car count has decreased by one from last year, from nine to eight. Oh, well. As usual, this class is pretty tough to call, but I'll do my best here. Oh, and as per my other annual tradition, the odds probably won't add up and you'll get mad. Especially if you're Mike.

The Long(er) Shots

#38 Performance Tech Motorsports Oreca FLM09 - I'll be honest, the only one of the three drivers that I know much of anything about is James French, who I know from his exploits in SCCA Formula Atlantic. I guess I do remember a bunch of folks on Twitter during last year's Petit Le Mans cursing at Jerome Mee for causing an incident or two, but that's all that I can say for either him or the last driver, James Vance. Three mostly unknown drivers are not going to beat the much more vaunted lineups, unless something befalls literally all seven other cars in class (which isn't impossible). Odds - 50 to 1.

#52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca FLM09 - Tom Kimber-Smith is a great pair of hands, with plenty of experience (and wins) in this class. Mike Guasch has also had his share of success in LMPC as well. Andrew Novich and Tyler Palmer are making the step up to the big series for the first time. A 24 hour race in a prototype car is a rough way to jump into endurance racing. I have a really tough time seeing this team getting by the bigger guys as well. Odds - 40 to 1.

The Pack

#61 BAR1 Motorsports Oreca FLM09 - Martin Plowman is a prototype super stud. But he's pretty much the only thing that I know about this driver lineup, as Marc Drumwright is the only other listed driver at the time of writing (three spots are "TBA", though it looks like maybe Chapman Ducote and Cody Ware drove the car at the "Roar Before the 24" test). Too many question marks. Odds - 25 to 1.

#85 JDC/Miller Motorsports Oreca FLM09 - Stephen Simpson is pretty darned good and has plenty of experience. Chris Miller and Rusty Mitchell are solid as well. Mikhail Goikhberg is stepping up to LMPC after winning the IMSA Prototype Lights L1 series last year, where he won about 84 races (at least it felt like it). A solid lineup, but falls short of some of the known quantities in the cars we've yet to talk about. Odds - 10 to 1.

#16 BAR1 Motorsports Oreca FLM09 - We've already talked about Martin Plowman, who's also listed in this car on top of the #61. Johnny Mowlem is incredibly experienced and plenty fast. Tomy Drissi is a very good "gentleman driver" (I said this about him in last year's preview, too). Team owner Brian Alder is probably pretty quick (he won the Prototype Lights L2 series last year), but doesn't have a whole lot of experience in LMPCs, to my knowledge. Tom Papadopolous has been around LMPC for a couple years but has yet to win much. Again, a good lineup, but I just can't rate them as highly as the teams that are yet to come. Odds - 10 to 1.

#8 Starworks Motorsports - Here's where the plot thickens. Everybody in this car (Mirco Schultis, Renger van der Zande and Alex Popow) minus Mike Hedlund has won in LMPC. And Hedlund has driven a bunch of different cars over the last couple of years, so he's plenty experienced, too. Add in the fact that it's Starworks, who have consistently fielded LMPCs for years, and you've got a strong contender. Odds - 5 to 1.

#11 RSR Racing Oreca FLM09 - An utterly loaded lineup. IndyCar driver Jack Hawksworth, ex-(and maybe sometimes still) IndyCar driver Bruno Junquiera, upcoming young American Gustavo Menezes (who drove in the FIA Formula 3 championship last year) and very capable "gentleman driver" Chris Cumming (who's won a bundle of races in LMPC). This lineup is about as good as it gets. Odds - 5 to 1.

The Favorite

#54 CORE Autosport Oreca FLM09 - With all that nice stuff that I just said about the #8 Starworks and the #11 RSR cars, how is this team still the favorite? Because they're the defending race and series (twice) champions. And they brought back Colin Braun, Jon Bennett, Mark Wilkins and James Gue, which is the same lineup that won them this race last year. Oh, and they were the fastest LMPC at the Roar Before test, to boot. Until somebody can unseat them, they're the favorites. Odds - 3 to 1.

One class down, three to go. Stay tuned for the rest of the classes later in the week!

Catching and Framing

Anyone who has been keeping up with the Chicago Cubs' offseason surely knows by now that the team is placing an unprecedented value on the framing ability of catchers. So what does it mean exactly, and what is the impact? As a Cubs fan, I'll look at it from my team's perspective, but this is obviously a subject that all MLB fans should be familiar with now, particularly if you grew up studying stats on the backs of baseball cards like the three GBS writers definitely did.

Welington Castillo was the starting catcher for the Cubs during the past two seasons. He is generally seen as a quality young catcher with a bright future, especially offensively. In the 2013-14 seasons, Castillo averaged 10 home runs, 39 RBIs, and 34 runs scored. Those are not bad numbers from a traditionally weak offensive position, especially if a team has an otherwise good offense and does not rely on power numbers from the catcher. The Cubs appear to be moving in that direction, at least, as players like Javier Baez, Jorge Soler, and other top hitting prospects begin to arrive in Chicago.

Still, the Cubs made a run after Russell Martin before trading for Miguel Montero and signing David Ross. So why did the front office suddenly place so much emphasis on upgrading behind the plate?

A quick look at some stats on Baseball Prospectus shows us exactly why. You can study the numbers yourself, but to briefly summarize, last year Montero framed enough pitches and earned enough extra strikes (144.9) to account for 13.3 runs for his team, ranking 3rd out of all MLB catchers. Castillo's calculated credited runs, on the other hand, totaled -7.0 (yes, he lost runs), accounting for more than a 20-run difference and placing him 72nd among catchers.

If these numbers truly translate into on-field improvements, a 20-run gap is tough to ignore. Last season, Montero (.243 average, 13 home runs, 72 RBIs, 40 runs) was also better offensively than Castillo (.237, 13 home runs, 46 RBIs, 28 runs). If Montero is going to drive in 26 more runs with his bat while earning 20 more runs with his framing skills, his addition to the roster is huge.

I'm looking forward to learning more about advanced catching metrics this season and will hopefully have positive results in Chicago to discuss here as well.
