Remember Mark Micowski? If you followed the Furious Wedge in 2009, you know we sort of attempted to adopt the Vermont Catamount baseball team as our official team of the spring/summer, since it would be the school's final year competing in baseball (and softball). We both got busy and basically failed in our mission, but we did manage to spotlight Micowski, one of the team's standout players.
Last week, Wedge and I were talking about the blog and Micowski's name somehow came up, so I suggested that we continue to follow him throughout his collegiate career and further, should he be so fortunate. In the couple of games I was able to watch on the internet, the kid proved he could obviously play baseball.
So it didn't take me long to find him at his new school, Georgia State. From his bio:
In his second season at Vermont, earned America East All-Conference Second Team honors after finishing the year with a .365 batting average and a team-high 28 stolen bases...Started 54 games, leading the team with 219 at bats, 80 hits and four triples...Finished second on the team with 55 runs scored, 116 total bases, 16 doubles and a .434 on base percentage...Over the summer, was selected to the East Team in the New England College Baseball League All-Star Game; for the season, batted .328, while leading his team with 45 hits, seven triples and 65 total bases, as well as 10 stolen bases.
The Panthers had an exciting season last year and are expected to continue that success. Georgia State Assistant Coach Brad Stromdahl on Micowski:
“Mark will have an easy transition to Georgia State after playing at the highest level the last two seasons at Vermont. He has valuable division one experience and is dynamic at both the plate and on the bases. Mark is a multi-tool player and will have a presence at the top of the line-up next season.”
Sounds great!
